Trip to The East Coast
I was at a college reunion for several days which was more fun than I have had in a long time. It was amazing to sit down with an old classmate or fraternity brother and pick up conversations as if they were something we were talking about yesterday rather than fifty years ago.
The best part was to be surrounded by bright guys for three days. I am sure there were some bright ladies present but they were not classmates since my college was all male in those dark ages when such things were possible. As a matter of fact after elementary school I never attended school with a female since my prep school was all boys. My wife occasionally indicates that she thinks, my frequently demonstrated lack of sensitivity on some subjects may be a result of early deprivation of daily sensitivity training from female classmates.
I didn’t find any classmate that had developed a politically correct structure to their life since we graduated those many years ago. Irreverent sharp conversation was still part of the verbal exchanges. The more liberal participants somehow did not seem of the same ilk as the Obamanestas. Most of the objections to Obama’s predecessor had to do with the wars that we were dragged into without exit strategy. Among my fraternity brothers and classmates were retired Colonels and Commanders who had spent youthful time in Viet Nam. They were all trained to respect the office of the Commander in Chief but none thought much of his conduct of the war. No surprise here with this repeat of old news.
Sensitivity training sessions were not part of any life that was represented among my fraternity brothers at the reunion. I did not meet anyone who thought that Nancy Pelosi had a totally functioning brain, even among those of a liberal persuasion. Questioning as to thoughts about Harry Reid usually received a shrug and a negative shake of the head sometimes accompanied with, a wry grin
My faith in the American ability to overcome the current drive toward a socialist/fascist government was strengthened by this trip East. There still are thinking folks living in this crowded, highly educated part of the country. I was reminded on the trip that liberals are also
Americans who simply require additional training in the American dream as a development factor in making this a great country. The most liberal member of my fraternity was also arguably the nicest guy that was in attendance. This is not the usual characteristic of liberals in the Obama camp.
The political correctness element that has crept into our lives needs to be chucked.. We need acceptance of newcomers as a continued part of our ethos, but the rule of law must remain the core of our countries operating standard. Control our borders was an almost universal expression by the attendees. It is a need for all political persuasions to join and address the illegal entry of aliens to our country. I had the feeling at the reunion that my gathered fraternity group could call a meeting and come up with three or four sensible proposals in an afternoon.
There is nothing new or astonishing contained here. My reunion refreshed my understanding that there are many clear thinkers who put country before political party. I had a stiffening of resolve and will move with renewed vigor in the coming weeks in my call for a new loyal opposition to the Obama programs that have no elements of fiscal responsibility.
A family BBQ this afternoon with 10 to 15 liberals surrounding me. I know when to be quiet. I think I’ll smile and focus on the food. Ten to one are odds I’m not prepared to deal with today
