Thoughts about Obama are Following Me

Every once in a while it’s good to get out of the mountains and visit with the thoughts of folks who have a different orientation. Thats the plan for the next week. I’m writing this at 35,000 feet while heading East. A college reunion is the center piece of the trip but I will be seeing old friends and associates and a lot of people on the East Coast whom I consider clear thinkers on political issues.

The direction that the Obama is leading our nation is something that has not previously happened in our history. Some readers are a bit upset because I compared the current events to Germany in the 30’s. I majored in history and was fortunate to have a professor, for my 20th Century Europe course, that was not only brilliant but had done some of his graduate studies in Italy in the 30’s. He described in great detail the move to fascist governments that took place in Germany and Italy. When I was studying this subject I thought that it would never happen in America especially after our WW11 experience. I was sure we woud never let ourselves be led down that path .

The passage of years and an easy life have eroded political history memory for generations that are much younger than me. An economic hard time and a charismatic political figure are the basic ingredients for moving a country down such a dangerous path. Promises of a government that will ease every anxious moment and assure the population that the government will cure all economic and society ills was the message from the political Elmer Gantry of both the 30’s and what we are now experiencing.

My first jolt of doubt came in Denver when Obama moved from the convention center to a stadium venue for his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination as their candidate for President. The setting was a copy of the Hitler extravagances of the 30’s The speech and the setting whipped the adoring audience to a mindless frenzy in each instance. I thought that Obama would be slightly embarrassed by the stage setting arranged for the speech. Embarrassed he wasn’t! He reveled in the setting and has carried that same strategy of crowd stimulus into his Presidency.

He traveled to Europe in the campaign and spoke as a conquering Caesar to multitudes of adoring crowds. Like Caesar he towered above the crowd while we mere mortals scurried about his feet seeking some gain from reflected glory.

Now our Congress scurries about continuing that awe struck attitude on the important isues of governing. I can’t believe that we are letting this inexperienced, marginally competent President, lead us like he really knows what he is doing.

He doesn’t know what he is doing with almost any aspect of governing America.
The auto debacle he has created is only in the first stage of crumbling. He will try to shift blame for what will happen but thoughtful people will recognize that it was Obama who structured the auto deals. In a still sane world if he were an applicant for an executive position with one of the auto companies they might have hired him for a training position in a motivational employee program giving pep talks. His community organizing experience would not have qualified him for have any meaningful decision making job. He has now nationalized GM and is directing operations with no experience running anything of significance. Auto makers, financial wizards and the general public are not hitting the streets protesting this situation. An explanation might be that something has been put into our drinking water. Valium must be being slipped into the bottled water on the tables at Republican caucus meetings where strategy is being discussed. There has to be a reason that the Republicans are standing by while our country is being stolen from us before our very eyes. I think that if I were in Congress I would be ready to break chairs on my way to the podium to protest without a “by your leave Madam Speaker”.
My protest would start with a demand to the majority that the Speaker leave, and they give America a leader that is honest. The Speaker need not agree with the minority but must be honesr

Obama is on my TV screen every day. I feel that I am now living a chapter of a previously unpublished George Orwell novel

We suddenly live in a world without a meaningful protest to be heard about the actions of the least qualified President in the history of our nation. Is this a dream? Please somebody pinch me.

The plane has landed and I will be spending the next few days socializing with old college friends and fraternity brothers. I am anxious to hear what this group of bright experienced men are thinking about the changes being crafted by Obama,
