The Obama Date Night
The Obama date night in New York sends a clear message to America concerning the Presidents lack of truthful concern in several critical areas.
The reduction of our carbon footprint that is being promoted for all Americans does not concern the President personally. He expects us to change our driving and living style but does not seem to understand that we expect examples to come from his activity. The date night in New York does not show concern from him as to the effect of his actions on those who are suffering in this recessionary period. The jet flight to NYC with the cost in fossil fuel and per hour cost of operation was not a responsible use of taxpayer money
I would be impressed if he had driven to NY in one of the converted riding mowers he is promoting as the car of the future for America. That might be a stretch but Amtrak runs a fast train, the Acela Express, from DC to NY that would have helped attract attention to this government owned train service if he and Michelle had ridden on the rails to NY. I have used this service many times and have found it to be fast, comfortable and about $150 for the trip per person each way. Figure about $600 round trip for the two of them. He could have paid for the ticket himself and impressed everyone with his actions. I’m sure Amtrak would have provided a private quiet car for them and their security team.
A date night is fine but I’m not interested in paying for it. When I was in business and flew to Europe my company did not pay for my wife’s ticket when she accompanied me.
I paid for that ticket and every personal expense that was involved that did not relate to business. Meals, show tickets and any transportation were paid for personally. I always flew coach; I did this as an example to my associates. I knew that it was important that as the CEO I needed to clearly demonstrate the importance of responsible use of company funds. I think that the President should be as concerned about the example he sets. His salary is $400,000 and that is not chump change, especially when you consider free housing in a pretty nice residence. Camp David is there for a week in the woods when the family needs some private time. Staff and meals are included in the package. Not a bad deal.
I understand that there are times when the President and his wife as a couple represent our country and then the cost of their activity is properly a government expense. Dates in NY do not meet those criteria. The Obama’s’ should pay for their date night activities. Their security related expense is probably enormous and that is enough for the taxpayers to be paying. The President needs to show a much greater concern for a his public actions which have not demonstrated a real belief in what he is promoting as a required change in our use of fossil fuel.
Note: The comments of Heath Suddleson concerning my previous Post ‘Republican Failure” are worth reading. Heath tells me I am on target but have not gone far enough in my analysis. It is comforting to know that there are folks like Heath who are willing to take the time to contribute their thoughts to my Post and expand the effort with useful commentary.
