Same Sex Marriage and Miss California

In an attempt to deal with a news item not arranged by the President I decided to check out the news concerning the most recently proclaimed hater of gays, Miss California, Carrie Prejean. She was a contestant for the Miss USA title in a beauty contest produced by Donald Trump. She has been vilified by some as the greatest danger to homosexuality to come along in years.

Having pretty much overcome my homophobia some years ago I was prepared to try to get a handle on the issue of same sex marriage that is taking up some news space regularly. Miss California in the “intellectual” portion of the contest was asked by Perez Hilton, a gossip reporter who is gay, what she thought about same sex marriage. Her answer was pretty straightforward. She essentially said that, “there are those that think it’s the thing to do but I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman”. Not her exact words, but close enough. The gay reporter who had asked the question then threw a public hissy fit over her answer calling her a dumb bitch!. Listening to all the coverage I could find, I became more confused as I researched the incident. The hissy fit guy in a later interview seemed to be trying to make the point that, to believe that marriage should only be between a man and woman was some kind of perverted thinking.

We are becoming a nation of somewhat nutty people was my final conclusion. I couldn’t figure out what Miss California had done to evoke such hateful characterization by hissy fit guy and the broad news coverage was even more puzzling. The only thing I could see to criticize was the goofy giant ear rings that she wore during the questioning

I realized that my personal homophobia had been put into a suspended state some years ago by gay associates who were bright, and lively without subjecting me and the office to conversations concerning their sexual preferences. This area of conversation was not encouraged concerning either hetro or homo sexual activity. I also remembered that the hissy fit was not any part of the way my gay employees acted.

Hissy guy caused me to review my course to diminished homophobia which started while in college. I vividly remember joining a group of classmates to go to a gay bar in New Jersey. Someone thought it would be fun to go and cause a scene by harassing the gay guys and I said I’d come along to watch the fun. The fun was short lived as one of my classmates started making obnoxious comments. I found myself being picked up by a guy with giant muscles and heaved like a toy through a screen door onto the parking lot My four classmates came sailing out the now broken screen door and landed on top of me before I could move.

A new reality started to dawn and an awakening to the fact that maybe my ideas on the homosexual condition were not completely correct. I have to tell you that the screen door platoon were not the hissy fit type. They were tough, no nonsense guys.( at least no public nonsense) This was the start of my course to relative civility on the subject. The relative civility does not include an acceptance of marriage being other than between a man and a woman. I’m not out campaigning on the subject but the obnoxious reaction of the gossip reporter to Miss California’s statement of her belief is an indication of his unwillingness to acknowledge her 1st Amendment rights to express personal beliefs without fear of oppression for publicly stating those beliefs.

I think everyone in America needs to take a deep breath and read the Bill of Rights. They are Rights not possibilities. In today’s political climate the 1st, 4th and 5th Amendments need to be carefully read and understood. The current administration and Representative Conyers is starting to act like Perez Hilton and they all should collectively take a review course on the Bill of Rights and also consider Article 1 Section 10 of the Constitution This section deals with the Ex Post Facto actions they are considering.

We all seem to know the 2nd Amendment and our right to bear arms, but there are a bunch of others and none of them say anything about same-sex marriage being a Constitutional Right. Freedom of Speech is a Right. I’m not sure whether hissy fits are mentioned . I’ll check
