Charlie Rangle D. Representative of NY’s 15th Congressional District has been ranging about in an irregular manner for years. He has finally been called to task by his congressional colleagues for potential ethics violations.
Charlie is accused of major ethical violations which include:
The use of official stationery to raise money for the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at City College of New York.
The use of four rent-subsidized apartment units in New York City. The city’s rent stabilization program is supposed to apply to one’s primary residence. One had been used as a campaign office, raising a separate question of whether this was an improper gift.
Failure to report income as required on his annual financial disclosure forms. The committee had investigated his failure to report income from his rental unit at the Punta Cana Yacht Club in the Dominican Republic. Rangel also belatedly disclosed hundreds of thousands of dollars in investment assets.
The details of the charges are not yet fully available but Nancy Pelosi has been sitting on the Rangle case for nearly two years. She probably hoped it would disappear or not be addressed until after the elections in ovember.
If these charges are true discipline by his Congressional buddies will not be sufficient. This looks like jail time for these violations of more than ethical misdeeds:
Failure to report income, raising a million dollars for his Center at CCNY by granting favors in Congress and getting four government subsidized residences in NY at about $2500 rent per month when the normal rate would be about $8,000 per month are the basic “ethical” violations being investigated
Watch this case closely and take notes as to how the ethics committee handles it. It will floor me if Charlie doesn’t wrangle his way to a minor slap on the wrist for his transgressions. Charlie will be reelected for his 21st term in November by a constituency that has sent him back to Congress without serious opposition for 40 years
