Rogon Josh, Slumdog & India: Weekend Time Away From Our National Woes
A day away from writing about politics, the economy and our new president and his appointments is hard to do. A fertile field of possible subjects is laid out for consideration every day. But India has carried me away this morning.
Some months ago I wrote about a then little known movie that I loved, called Slumdog Millionaire. Now everyone knows that it is a great movie. The movie revived my long standing interest in visiting India. That is not going to happen until we get the economy straightened out and I can figure just how poor I have become. But we are fortunate that there is an excellent restaurant ,Flavor Of India, in Longmont Colorado that can transport you temporarily to India with their excellent food and service. So my wife and I took the imaginary trip on the Rogon Josh express last night. Rogan Josh is their outstanding rendition of the classic Curry Lamb dish. This dish is generally served at whatever is your preference of (heat). We order medium so that we do not require a two day recovery period of taste sensors.
Josh actually means hot, so be forewarned. Nan bread and basmati rice are always accompaniments when we go to India for dinner whatever the main course might be. There was also Tandori Chicken involved last night but that is not a favorite of mine at any restaurant. I suppose among Tandori fans it was fine but I am not sure what that red coloring in the yogurt comes from and have never asked
I came to know Indian food when I was spending a lot of time in England. There are great restaurants there, probably, because of their large population of immigrants from India. Whenever I flew into London, on the first night I usually went to Leicester square where I learned about food from India at a great restaurant that was just off the square.
I went alone which allowed me to ask dumb questions and experiment without having to consider fellow diners and recovering from jet lag in enjoyable surroundings. This worked so well that after a few visits they remembered me and always welcomed me with a new dish to try. I should have asked about the red stuff on the Tandori Chicken
This post is somewhat self serving. I now have many readers from India and hope that through Buck Says they will direct me to restaurants in the US that have been opened by relatives. I am looking for examples of specific regional specialties. I perhaps can have an imaginary tour of India through restaurants in America and share my experience on weekend posts when not covering politics, economics or the latest Pelosi nonsense. (An irresistible slip into my weekday mode- Nancy made me do it)
The various ethnic foods in America have contributed to the restaurant scene through the years. I believe that they were the challenge to a once somewhat mundane American cuisine that has been uplifted by today’s cadre of outstanding American Chefs. The fact of American excellence can be witnessed almost every day on the Food Channel.
I need to suggest that if you gain an interest like mine in excellent restaurants and special dishes at home there is a required accompaniment. Four or 5 days at the Y for at least an hour each day will keep your interest at a level seldom noticed.
