Phillies Answer to National Concerns
Watching TV and listening to the radio is a joy this week. I haven’t bothered with watching the talking heads on the Sunday shows and haven’t even thought about Obama’s latest pronouncements. Rush and Progressive radio have not been on my dial this week.
The Phillies are up 3 games to 1 on the Dodgers and I have almost pushed 1964 out of my memory after 44 years of trying. It’s not quite gone but Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Cliff Lee and their team mates are doing a great job of grief counseling to help finally erase those memories.
Ryan Howard has faithful fans in our family. Last Spring when the Phillies were playing the Rockies in Colorado our family Philly fan base had seats a few rows behind their dugout. During practice my 11 year old grandson ran down next to their dugout to see if he could get some autographs on his commemorative 2008 Phillies World Series championship ball. Ryan Howard saw this little kid with his Phillies cap on, holding up a baseball. Howard came over and asked Ian if he could sign his ball. The ball was signed and Ryan asked a few questions about how this little Phillies fan got to Colorado. At the end of the meeting Ryan took Ian’s cap and said “let me sign this for you” then said something into the dugout that produced from a team mate a felt tipped pen for him to sign the cap. That cap didn’t go into a trophy case it was on my grandsons head at every Little League practice all summer. Ian’s team had blue caps so his red Phillies cap couldn’t be worn in the game but it was in safely stored to be on his head at the end of every game.
Leo Durocher the crusty old time Dodger manager was reputed to have once said: “Good guys always finish last” Our family knows that is not the case. Ryan Howard disproves that famous Durocher quote.
Tomorrow I’ll tell you about Jimmy Rollins and “Hamburgers on the New Jersey Turnpike”. These are not only great players but really great guys
