Carter, Bush, Obama
There is little doubt in my mind that these three names will share a similar distinction. They will be the three one term Presidents of recent times. The Bush referred to, is of course, Bush the father. Ross Perot helped him to obtain that one term distinction.
Jimmy Carter became a one timer because he was an inept leader with little understanding of financial matters. Interest rates in his administration were so high that commerce virtually stopped. Unemployment caused by Carter reached levels that the Obama policy is likely to duplicate in the next several months.
Obama polls indicate his popularity is dropping like a stone as people come to understand the destructive nature of his leadership. We made a mistake last year but fortunately our system of government gives us an opportunity for a partial “do over” after two years and a total revamp after 4 years. I hope that we have some sensible alternatives in 2010 to send a clear message that spending America into 3rd world status is not what we expected from our 2006 and 2008 election choices.
I am not altogether confident that we will have the kind of clear distinction in 2010 between candidates that will make things easy. Opposition to the “spend into bankruptcy” philosophy of Pelosi, Reid and Obama is not emerging with an alternative to the actions of this administration.
It has become very clear that the current political congregation in DC really doesn’t know where the money comes from that they are spending so freely. It is not their money they are spending. It is my money and my children’s money and now my grandchildren’s money. They are throwing billions around like they are pitching pennies.
Cars for Clunkers is a program that cost us a billion dollars in about 10 days. It was designed to give a stimulus to the car industry. I looked upon the idea with curious caution as to where it could lead. My caution was warranted. Congress is planning to throw another 2 billion dollars into the Clunker program. The stimulus is about to become an additional subsidy for the auto industry and the Auto Workers Union that is a major support group of the Obama administration. Pelosi and Reid figure that a program that spends a billion dollars of public money in 10 days certainly deserves another two billion. This is probably stimulating deep thinking by Rahm Emanuel as to what other businesses can be subsidized to garner support for the continuation of the current political philosophy.
Everyone understands that Health Care needs adjustment. The nation doesn’t need another trillion dollars of debt to make an adjustment. A trillion dollars of new health care related debt with the promise that it will be recovered by government savings is pure baloney.
No government program is designed to save us money. Social Security is in financial peril with government administration and the increased unfunded benefits that have been added through the years. Medicare cost has expanded beyond any predictions by Congress when passing additional benefits to be administered by the government. The list of wasteful government programs far outnumbers any record of efficient management. The same financial results can be expected from government control of the nation’s health.
Congress in recent years has shown that they are financially irresponsible and cannot predict anything having to do with the cost of programs being enacted. This deficiency is not limited to either party. The current group has stupidly (to use a Presidential term) compounded the irresponsibility to levels never previously imagined.
Congress is populated by a group of people who have reelection as their primary goal in life. The House is more responsive to public pressure because they must answer public concerns with elections every two years.
In August your Representative is in the neighborhood “making nice” to the electorate.
The duty of the electorate is to let them know that the spending must be reigned in and a Health Plan that spends a trillion dollars more of debt is not reigning. A government plan that takes more than 1000 pages to describe is absolutely another example of government excess. We do not need another politically designed government program. We need a program that saves us money involved with the maintenance of our health.
We need a program that can be described in fewer pages than either the New or Old Testament of the Bible.
It has to be short enough for John Conyers and every member of Congress to read. I am not sure if I can expect all of them to understand what they are reading. I do believe that if they are required to read the legislation that they are passing, that some may realize that much of it is not in the national interest.
There is a 48 hour rule that legislation must be available 48 hours before voting. This is supposedly to give members a chance to read and consider what they are about to vote on. TARP and Stimulus bills have been rammed through Congress in record time without being read. This has happened because the 48 hour rule has been waved in almost every case by the Pelosi led House. This clear strategy is to get items passed that would otherwise be sharply questioned by large segments of the public if time and explanations were generally available
We deserve the time to consider the proposed actions of our representatives in both the Senate and the House. August is our month with our Representatives. They are in their district ( when not at the beach) and need to know our concerns about financial matters.
They need to understand that we need a Health Care Plan, not another government program that will add more debt to an already obscene fiscal performance by this administration. It is our government and we need to remind our Representatives of that fact. Today!
