Buckminster Fuller-Time for Some New Models?
We as a nation face the myriad of problems which are documented daily for us by all forms of news media. The problems faced by Jason and his Argonauts seem minor compared to the list of obstacles faced by our new president starting a week from now.
It’s a good thing that he and the family took some time off in Hawaii a few weeks ago because they will have trouble taking time for relaxation for quite some time. Wall Street couldn’t have disrupted things more for “President Obama even if they used a script written by a great conspiracy fiction writer. When I sit back and try to think things through I keep coming back to the conclusion that we may be at a point to consider a Buckminster Fuller thought which might now be useful for our consideration.
Bucky said: “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
— R. Buckminster Fuller
We need some new models for Wall Street and we don’t have to look far to find direction to design them. I deal with two banks. Neither need to be bailed out. Perhaps being centered 2000 miles from Wall Street kept their operating system free from the virus of greed that has infected such a large part of the financial system. Maybe our new model should start with an investigation of those institutions that operate with people and a system that is weathering out this storm in their own quiet financial lagoons.
The Treasury and Federal Reserve relationship needs a new model for operating in the future. I’m not expert enough to suggest the model form, but I am smart enough after watching recent events to know that the current system needs an overhaul into a sensible operating format. No system that shovels money out the back door without designating use and responsibility can be tolerated to handle our money.
I believe that John Kennedy was considering a major revamp of the Federal Reserve prior to his assassination. It would be useful to revisit the documentation of his proposal to see if we can find a possible start for the design of a new model.
Our national educational systemis in sorry shape. We are living in a liberated age in which almost all of the educational system has failed to adjust to the reality of change. We seem to be still following a system design to train the students to be good factory workers and take orders. The educators for the most part have not noticed that we really don’t have many factories anymore. There are still great teachers and administrators who need to be identified and have their thoughts put together to discuss the new model and how we can move beyond the constraints of those organizations whose primary mission is other than the education of the kids.
Maybe Buckminster Fuller had forecasting skills beyond those that are well documented. Maybe he saw where we were heading and gave us a clue to the next steps that might help us on our journey as a nation.
Note: Chris Fearnley stimulated the thoughts that led to this posting. I have shamelessly incorporated lines and thoughts from Chris’s emails to me and have not credited him adequately. Although I wrote it I’ll give Chris total credit for any worthwhile thoughts that are interspersed. Chris is one of the nations foremost Buckminster Fuller inspired intellectuals. He also is President of LinuxForce Inc. and a great friend.
