A Republic: Not A Democracy!

by Buck on November 5, 2009

A friend sent me a very useful video reminder as to why we were founded as a Republic and not a Democracy.

It has always been a concern when I hear our government referred to as a Democracy. We are not a Democracy and the founding fathers clearly understood that a Democracy was not a desirable form of government,

We are a Republic with the duty of government being to protect the individual rights of it’s citizens. Democracy inevitably leads to Oligarchy and the erosion of individual rights as government assumes more and more control of it’s citizens.

A Republic is a government based on law not majority rule. The rule of majority always leads to the rights of those not in the majority to be diminished. The current example being demonstrated in Congress concerning the Heath Bill is proof that individual rights are threatened by a majority that ignores those laws that were designed to protect it’s citizens.

Our founding fathers were students of history and were aware of the disintegration of Rome when it changed from a Republic to a Democracy over time. The failure of Greece when Democracy ignored the protections of a Republic were well known to our founders

The United States Republic has no reference in either the Declaration of Independence or our Constitution to a Democracy.

I urge every reader to take the short course of reminder as to why we a Republic that is contained in the attached video. It only takes a few minutes and will clearly outline why we are, what we are, and why we must remain a nation whose government has a singular responsibility : To protect our individual rights as outlined by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution.
